Social stereotypes with aged persons

Stereotypes about the aged tend to emphasise negative images such as wrinkled, slow, helpless, dependent, sickly, thin, deformed, stoop-shouldered, and dentured. In this study, 125 adults in three age groups (young, middle-aged, and elderly) rated the typicality and approximate age of individuals representing 11 stereotypes of the elderly. The negative roles and stereotypes that people with disabilities have always lived with are now compounded by the many cultural assumptions and prejudices regarding aged persons.
